... Terre Haute's all time most famous neighborhood...

Upper right in this picture I nabbed from the WTHI-TV tower camera is Terre Haute's all time most famous neighborhood. Last month I accompanied a friend to the corner of 2nd and Cherry. Tom said we had been there before and it was a surprise to me because I never went there after Junior High and didn't meet Tom until late in high school but he remembers that we were showing an ISTC foreign student local attractions.

There were perhaps a dozen brothels in the district in the 50s, down from many dozens earlier, and it was a right of passage for many boys of my milieu and it remains so in a way for the building at right center is the Social Security office and it's time for Tom and his peers to sign-up for retirement benefits.

We got off some good jokes about this latest "right of passage" and the location:

... not the first time we've been to 2nd and Cherry.
They already knew John but I had to take a number and wait.
John waited in the lobby and I went into a little room and transacted business.

Nothing remains of the district's past except that large tree on 2nd Street behind the Social Security office. It is probably 100 years old and could tell tales if it would.  Posted by Hello
