Ketchup

Personally, I don't like ketchup. I grew up with access to fresh or
home canned tomatoes and used them as a condiment. I stayed home with Grandma on Saturday nights (and listened to her complain about FDR's New Deal) while my older brothers and cousins went to town. Then when I reached the age when I was allowed to join the big kids and go to a Movie on the town square in Marshall and before that,
hamburger, french fries and a coke at Tom's Restaurant.

I had heard of ketchup and imagined it to be a fancy, downtown version of tomatoes in a convenient bottle. I tried it on my food and found that it wasn't tomatoes at all but a sugary goo that ruined my meal.

I bet that I haven't eaten a cup of ketchup in my life and if the
accidental servings that happen when you forget to specify NO KETCHUP in fast food line are discounted, not more than an ounce.

So, you see, I'm ignorant about ketchup... or I was until I read this article:

Now I know more than I ever wanted to know about it, and about the
tastes: sweet, sour, bitter, salty and umami. That's right - UMAMI is a taste now. Read all about it if you have the time.

(preferring Heinz 57 steak sauce or, lately, Country Bob's)
