A day on the Farm. Posted by Hello

Seeing Indiana through the eyes of my grandsons, Californians.

At the Morgans' farm in Montezuma when we entered through the gates to the grand old farm house, all the yard dogs, the Jack Russel Terriers, the Border Collie and the momma of the hound dogs came out to meet Kevin and Anthony, Morgan followed behind them and warmly welcomed us all to fresh whole hog sausage and egg breakfast and sausage gravy for the biscuits. Maybe it was because my diet only allowed me a single patty but I don't think so; I think that was the best sausage I've ever had.

Splurge, the Border Collie, rounded up the sheep and goats on command and brought them to the barnyard fence so Kevin and Anthony could make contact with farm life. My plan was to take the boys to a farm where real livestock is raised. Give them the gift of experiencing that style of life, I thought.

I learn much from trying to teach those boys a little. The Morgan farm has a long history but most recently was: a weekend retreat farm of a wealthy family from Indianapolis, a bankruptcy and neglected, and presently, the Morgan home where Tom and Wendi are raising their two sons, Zach and Tanner. The family balances school, sports and their professions with maintaining and operating this farm.

Morgan struck a balance between entertaining us and educating the boys and it harmonized with my own efforts. I recorded what I could with my pocket camera so that we can relive the day on the farm.
